As we all know, Hormone therapy was once an undisputed treatment for menopausal symptoms until its use diminished significantly due to health risks cited by some women using them. Even though later it was accepted as a safe therapy, women have been skeptical about it.

In a layman’s language, hormone therapy is a treatment with medicines that contain female hormones to replace the ones the body sharply decreases to produce after menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy can benefit in the following ways:

  • It can effectively treat common menopausal troubles such as hot flashes, vaginal discomfort, dryness, itching, burning sensation, and discomfort during intercourse and night sweats.
  • It reduces fractures and bone loss post menopause.
  • A combined treatment of progesterone and estrogen therapy could reduce the risk of colon cancer
  • According to data, estrogen could decrease the risk of heart diseases.
  • It helps to protect the bones against thinning.

There are two types of hormones, namely bioidentical and synthetic. The bioidentical hormone therapy is more preferred due to it being a natural approach. They are derived from wild yam and soy plants. They are considered safe for long term use as their molecular structure or chemical makeup matches the one in a women’s body.

Who is hormone therapy not meant for?

Hormone therapy is not meant for women with heart strokes or liver diseases. They are not meant for women who have or previously had ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer. Women with blood clots in the legs or lungs and those with unexplained vaginal bleeding should avoid taking hormone therapy.

It is to be noted here that if a woman is not bothered by the menopausal symptoms and underwent menopause after the age of 45 years there is no need of hormone therapy to stay healthy. A few lifestyle changes and medication for reducing risks of osteoporosis and heart diseases is adequate.

Who is hormone therapy meant for?

If you are a woman with over all good health, you can take the hormone therapy to get relief from the experience moderate to severe hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.
